Services

 Emerald Marine Environmental Consultancy Limited is a recently formed micro enterprise incorporated January 2022 by John Power, prior to this Emerald Marine had operated as a sole trade/partnership since April 2017. Emerald Marine specialize in the provision of high-quality data collection and project management services to the Irish marine sector.

Emerald Marine employ a number of higly experienced and motivated consutlants offering a broad suite of consultancy services. Emerald Marine offer project management services and have experience in managing fisheries projects, undertaking cetacean and ornithological surveys, and overseeing the implementation of environmental mitigation measures. All projects are completed in a timely and cost effective fashion, with deliverables attaining an extremely high standard.

Emerald Marine offer data collection services and can supply field ecologists for a variety of studies. We have particular experience in supplying;
  • Marine Mammal Observers and PAM operators to coastal and offshore projects
  • Cetacean surveyors for coastal and offshore surveys
  • Ornithologist and ESAS surveyors for coastal and marine bird surveys
  • Fisheries Liaison Officers for both shore-based engagement and offshore liaison services
  • Fisheries Observers aboard commercial fishing vessels and research survey vessels. 

About Us

John Power

John Power is a senior marine ecologist, highly experienced fisheries liaison officer, and director of Emerald Marine Environmental Consultancy Ltd. John has over 14 years’ experience working in a variety of fields, in both public and private sectors. His core competencies are in the fields of fisheries liaison, commercial fisheries, fish and shellfish ecology, seabird ecology and marine mammal ecology.


In 2017, John founded Emerald Marine Environmental Consultancy to deliver a pilot program to the Marine Institute in response to a requirement to co-ordinate the delivery of a statistically robust at-sea catch sampling program. Through this endeavour he gained invaluable experience in liaison with fishing industry, co-ordination of sea-going staff and project management. These skills were later applied successfully to a wide range of projects delivered through Emerald Marine, such as; provision of fisheries liaison services to the ORE industry, co-ordination of a DAFM Nephrops gear selectivity scheme, supply of fisheries samplers for BIM gear selectivity trials, completion of numerous ESAS seabird and marine mammal surveys for NPWS and ORE clients, intertidal bird surveys for the ORE sector, and supply of MMO and PAM operator services to the numerous ORE and harbour development projects. These projects involved survey design and implementation, development of digital data collection protocols, contract management, management and co-ordination of survey teams, data management and quality control, and delivery of technical reports and project outputs to clients.


John has worked extensively with the ORE sector, and has particular experience providing fisheries liaison services, commercial fisheries assessment reports and expert support to commercial fisheries and fish and shellfish chapters of EIARs and supporting documents. John has contributed to marine chapters of numerous EIARs, produced many scientific technical reports and provided expert ecological opinion to An Bord Pleanála to assist the Bord in the review of marine applications.
